Hip dysplasia (HD) is a painful dog disease that usually arises from inheritance. Affected dogs suffer from an improperly developed hip joint, which over time leads to more and more restrictions and pain.
Even though the causes of hip dyplasia can be different, it is very likely that a four-legged friend is already born with the predisposition to the disease. In theory, this can happen to all dog breeds.
Painful hip joint malformation is most common in large dogs. Retrievers, Rottweilers and Bernese Mountain Dogs are among the dog breeds for which the painful illness is often diagnosed. Even a German shepherd is considered quite prone to HD.
If you want to buy a large breed of dog that is often affected by HD, you should inquire extensively about the health of the parent animals to ensure that they have not been bred with sick parent animals. Unfortunately, hip dysplasia cannot be completely ruled out, because the change can also occur without it being innate.
If you have a very young dog at home that is still growing, you should take good care of his health so that he is not exposed to excessive physical stress, for example through dog sport or constant climbing stairs. If he constantly strains his fine bone structure, this could favor the development of HD.
In addition, dogs that have very loose ligaments on the hip joints are also at risk. Nutrition and conditions under which the animal is kept also play a role and can make the symptoms appear more or less in the case of an existing disease - this is also why it is important to see a veterinarian quickly if you suspect the disease.
